Vera the Slightly Mad Penguin Falls Through the Universe
Vera the slightly mad penguin was slowly gliding through space at the speed of light.
She was careful not to get too close to the black holes drifting by,
stealing all the light they could get.
She had been floating like this for quite some time now
— looking for God.
So far, all she’d found were tiny traces.
She’d got a silver-lining halo when she passed the Moon.
“Just to keep you warm and safe,” she had said.
Vera was stunned that the “man in the moon” actually wasn’t a man at all.
She’d passed some people in a box, looking for Mars,
and a lot of strange things that PicaPica, the former thief, would have loved collecting.
She wasn’t especially brave, and now she felt she was too far away from home.
“Oh dear, where is home? I can’t see home anywhere!”
Vera felt the black holes growing bigger and closer.
But suddenly, in the great nothingness, she spotted Home — a tiny little blue pearl,
glowing from some unknown love and great beauty.
Awe filled her heart, warm and soft.
“I think I might look for God a little closer to home,” she whispered without sound.
Then she fell, light as a feather, all the way home.
