The Mothercastle

The Mothercastle

Basking in the sun, sparkling with gold and gemstones.
Suddenly, it just appeared.
It seemed like the princess had left.
There was no laughter to hear anywhere.

“Do they really live happily ever after?” Vera wondered.

“Shall we enter?” asked PicaPica, always hoping to find something worth collecting.
Vera had taught him not to be a thief anymore, but a collector of fine things instead.

“Nooo…” whispered Vera, eyes wide.
“We might run into a queen mother with a broken heart.
And I would not like to meet such darkness on this lovely day.
We’d better take the spiral stairs downtown.”

“Come on!” PicaPica nagged. “Don’t be scared. I’ll do the talking,” he said.
“It can’t be that bad.”

Vera shushed him. “What do you know about heartache?” she whispered harshly.

PicaPica shut his beak with a sharp click.
More than you think, he thought to himself, and jumped after Vera down the stairs.

He thought he heard the sound of teardrops in the silence —
but he was not sure.
