Vera ate a squid

I was sorting through old, useless paintings and realized there was a lot of good paper there. Suddenly, Vera, the slightly mad Penguin, appeared again. Poor thing — she couldn’t sleep.

Vera didn’t like this dream at all.
Usually, her dreams were full of flowers and soft, happy moments — petals and sunshine and maybe a polite fish or two.
But this one was just… unsettling.

She shouldn’t have eaten that squid.
Not just any squid — no, this one actually had a name: Betelgeuse. And she hadn’t known that until he was already swallowed.
Maybe Betelgeuse had been the very last of his kind. She really hoped he wasn’t.
Endangered. Gone. Floating somewhere between the stars and her stomach.

Vera woke up with a little ink still on her beak and a tiny ache in her heart — and a big ache in her stomach.
She burped loudly, shivered a little, and promised herself she’d stick to polite fish from now on.
And maybe a flower or two, just to be safe.
Then she turned her back on the endangered squid.
“Rest in peace,” she mumbled, and fell asleep again.
